My initial urge when Nick at REUPSpot.com gave his blessing for me to wax poetically about my favorite things in hip hop was to go head first into the column and start rattling off a myriad of blogs, web links, mixtapes, and obscure Nas references. But at his suggestion I will explain the premise, inspiration, and overall motif behind Breakfast Uv Champions.

Breakfast Uv Champions is the first that thing hip hop heads should line their stomachs with every morning (metaphorically speaking). It is part tastemakers’ boutique and part hip hop love affair, part empathic missionary journey, and part healing expedition. Idea of Breakfast Uv Champions steams from my music career and it is the idea of “waking up every morning with a champion’s mentality.” Doing the due diligence, homework, and putting in the 10,000 hours it takes to reach your goals and dreams or elite status; a top flight athlete’s state of mind.

I’m all about empowerment and self-validation (especially for artists) and I try to infuse that into everything that I do. The Breakfast Uv Champions column will be an extension of that. This editorial will cover some of my likes that I have encountered in this journey called hip hop. Any interesting Mixtapes, Albums, Videos, clothing, charities, events, products, schools, books, art, sports, politics & etc. in relation to hip hop culture that I come across will be highlighted. Kind of an Oprah’s favorite things for Hip Hop heads.

It is my hope to create a healthy relationship between hip hop artists and the blogosphere. I understand the whole Common “If I don’t like I don’t like that don’t mean that I’m hating” aspect to journalism but my goal is not to diminish anyone’s art or efforts, but to help participate in the celebration of the culture I love so much.

Honestly if I don’t like something then I probably just won’t cover it, which is not to imply that if you submit something and I don’t post it then I hate your ish, but simply put I’m not writing this column to be pompous or condescending or to have people way more talented than I kiss my ass. I writing this because I see so many artists putting their time, effort, money, sweat, and tears into this culture only to have their art half assed covered.

I have my music for all of that. This is just simply an effort for me to pass down what DJ Kool Herc passed down to Grandmaster Flash & Bambaataa, what Schooly D passed down to Snoop and what Anthony at High Volume record store on W. Belfort passed down to a teenage me. Carry on tradition.

Jon Black-“Lightshow”

A laidback pimpin’ Cali flow from this San Diego native (now based out of Houston). When Jon Black drops into the live version with the Clint Rater, drummer from Jody Seabody & the Whirls, the song takes you on a journey riding shotgun under the Houston city lights looking for ladies & fun. One of the smoothest, coolest voices I’ve heard on wax.

I like this clip for two reasons: 1) it’s a jamming ass track 2) it shows the hard work that artists put into their craft. Contrary to what Jay-z or Weezy would have you to believe, this shit doesn’t happen overnight. It takes hours upon hours of honing and sharping your blade, mastering your flows, stage presence and your ultimate weapon as an MC: your voice. Killa has done this with precision since leaving Slim Thug’s Boss Hogg Outlaws to form his own imprint AMG to back to doing his own thing. He has even gone as far as to changing his diet and tempering some of his vices.

Workshop Houston

Workshop Houston is a non-profit that works with the inner-city youth of Houston, TX in the areas of bike repair, welding, fashion & design, and music production. Here is a blurb from their webpage: “Workshop Houston’s mission is to provide youth with creative, technical and educational resources. Our vision is to lay the groundwork for a just society by creating a community that provides youth with support, expanded opportunities and alternative definitions of success.” Workshop Houston has five shops that provide resources and support for young people: the Third Ward Bike Shop (do-it-yourself bike repair), the Chopper Shop (welding and metal fabrication), the Beat Shop (hip-hop music production), the Style Shop (fashion and graphic design) and the Scholar Shop (tutoring and academic enrichment). DC Hip Hop Project

To be honest my knowledge of DC hip hop doesn’t go past Maybach Music artist Wale and the percussion based art form of Go-go music and the knowledge that those two are somehow intrinsically linked. Stumbling across this on rappersiknow.com was truly a treat for me and anybody else who is interested in how hip hop organically grows up in different areas. The first episode is hosted by Jamie Benson features Asheru & Blue Black of Unspoken Heard.

I will admit I am not thrilled about dudes like Soulja Boy or Lil B but at same the time I respect their hustle and the fact that they truly believe in their music. Both have developed cult like fan bases and have toured extensively. Both use guerilla marketing by shooting videos on their budgets. Is that not the essence of hip hop?

I digress though… not all these new dudes are all that bad to me. Tyler, the creator, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, and Yelawolf deserve honorable mentions. Slaughterhouse is one of the most lyrical outfits being backed by one of hip hop’s biggest stars. Machine Gun Kelly is blowing up fast with his Puff Daddy cosign. Yet people still consider hip hop to be dying.

Think everyone should open their minds to new artist. We can’t live in the 90’s forever. I’m not saying to go out and jump on the skinny jeans bandwagon but don’t be so ignorant.

Introduce yourself to our readers (Where you from, What does your name stand for):
I go by the name of Charmingly Ghetto. I was raised in Boston, MA yet my vision for sharing the music extends far beyond the area, the region and even the country. I want my music to reach the farthest corners of the globe. The name Charmingly Ghetto is derived from WEB DuBois’ social theory/commentary of the “double conciousness”. It basically sums up the duality of the life people of color in America are faced with in a struggle created by outside forces. Its also how I define myself; sort of a “jack of all trades” who can navigate through this wilderness we call life while preserving myself, my culture and my values.

How is your new international mixtape “Study A’Broad” different from your mixtape (Overstanding)?
This tape is different on a few levels. Firstly, my first project was solely produced by the Introspective Minds camp (S/O to them for holding the kid down) and this new project is produced by a cast of producers from all over the world; all the way from England to New Zealand and back. I really wanted to harness the power of the internet, the hip hop fans from all over the globe and challenge myself to tailor the direction of the project to be something that people everywhere can feel connected to. The IM family will be featured on this project; they produced the street single we released from the project “Alone in The World” featuring a dope verse by the homie R.E.K.S. from the ShowOff camp (BIG thanks to him for being an inspiration).

How were the responses for your project Overstanding?
People really received my project very well. For an artist that needs to be heard like myself I could not have asked for better love from the people around me. The homies over at RubyHornet.com featured my release on their site back in June and since then people have been downloading it, reviewing it (S/O to The Company Man over at BrooklynBodega.com for the live radio review of the EP) and giving me feedback. I can say that it served its purpose as a blueprint for people to identify my subject matter, gain a feel for my voice and flow and enjoy hearing an MC that loves to rhyme.

What makes you & I.M. gel so well?
I think that it’s the passion for growth that makes us gel so well on the production and rhyme tip. We both strive for a hip hop sound that we either love or that we want to hear; it just happens to come off so clean and so genuine that we continue to collab. I really believe in the talents of those cats and they will continue to make great music and as long as we have a great relationship I will continue to script over their gems. Word up.

What message are you trying to give with your mixtape “Study A’Broad”?
I want to deliver the message of understanding that influence and inspiration may come from the place you may not expect if you don’t allow your talents to let you know where you are loved. The producers on this project pushed me and encouraged me to create and develop this idea because we shared a common goal of creating a hip hop sound that we love and that we missed.

I hope the message that hip hop is a worldwide sound and culture with different influences gets across loud and clear; I guess it will all depend how loud people play it haha.

The project is featuring R.E.K.S., the homie K. Sparks and a team of songwriters/singers that I have been blessed to meet up with in my travels by the name of Thee Invisibles. Just enough features added and just the right dash of flavor to add to the mix.

So I was really shocked and sad to hear the news that Octavis Berry, aka Esbe the 6th Street Bully, 1/2 of Dred Skott and 1/8th of the League of Extraordinary Gz, had passed away. I was just talking with their manager a few days before about their performance at A3C in Atlanta, which according to reviews, went really great.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Octavis Berry’s family, and the whole League of Extraordinary Gz family. The world lost a great musician and lyricist, and by all accounts, an amazing person, father, friend, and general man of the people. His music lives on though, and he will never be forgotten.

It originated from a conversation me and Jon Black where having about originality in Hip-Hop, due to an incident that happened in the Houston underground hip-hop scene. Jon was very into it, and I thought it would make for a great talk on camera. So we decided on a panel, and put things in motion.

We chose to host this Roundtable Discussion at Screwed Up Records & Tapes, the original screw shop founded by DJ Screw. I thought the best place to have the discussion on Originality in Hip-Hop, was the symbol of originality in hip-hop in Houston.

The discussion is split into 5 parts, each part is about 15 minutes. It came out great, and overall is very entertaining, and a good discussion. Topics are all over the place (all relating to originality), from DJ Screw, to Jay-Z, Rhiana, even Will Smith, and everything in between.

With a reported number of more than 80,000 patrons expected to attend this year, the Bamboozle festival is three days of music by some of today’s biggest stars. A lineup featuring heavy hitters like Lil Wayne, Motley
Crue, and newcomer Wiz Khalifa raises the stakes even higher for The Break Contest, which gives one local artist the shot at performing main stage. Think that’s a big break? That’s not even the half of it. The winner also receives a headlining show at their home venue; demo submission to major label a&r reps; and even more cool prizes to break their band.

Having survived three rounds of the contest and taking the regional portion for Long Island, it is obvious that Wordspit is definitely a contender for the ultimate prize. Ended the year on a high, the recently released “Bud, Sweat and Beers” was probably the most original grime album to be released that year; naked emotion softened with catchy, easy going backing tracks made for a really interesting listen. With a style that can best be described as ‘raw’, Devlin has managed to burst into the mainstream without having to dilute his material – much to the pleasure of many grime fans.  As collaborations with Xample and Labrinth come to fruition, the kid from Dagenham will surely pick up where he left off in 2010.

Diggy Simmons (Atlantic Records)

For anyone who thinks that Willow Smith’s feats were impressive for her age, try listening to this young man. Son of Rev Run, Diggy has obviously had a lot of opportunities that many unsigned artists could only dream about. This however is what makes Diggy special in my eyes; he makes sure that everything that comes out of his mouth has purpose, constantly trying to prove his worth in the hip-hop community. The boy shows incredible lyricism and flow in a series of freestyle’s and shows that for a little man, he is more than capable of making a big noise.

Ed Sheeran (Atlantic Records)

Probably the most unconventional ‘rapper’ I have heard in a long time. His recently released collaboration project with a number of grime heavyweights demonstrates an impressive versatility that makes every track sound like a hit.  The best thing about Ed, in my opinion, is the incredible amount of soul he brings to his delivery; slick choruses combined with unbelievable verses. This man and his acoustic guitar are going places in 2011.

J. Cole (Roc-Nation)

Recently signed by Jay-Z, Cole’s slightly unconventional flow is refreshing to hear. The best thing about J. Cole is that he produces his own beats; his debut track “Who Dat” was self-produced – shunning the likes of Jay and Kanye to go at it alone. Cole has shown an impressive ability to be self-sufficient, holding his own behind the boards as well as in the booth – a dual talent not seen since one Mr West emerged on the scene. In “In the Morning” Ft. Drake, J raps “god bless the child that can hold his own” and he is definitely practicing what he preaches. I cannot wait for his album to drop.

Jay Electronica (Roc-Nation)

Argued to be the strongest rapper on the label at the moment, this man is slightly unknown in the UK, but not for long. With producers such as Just Blaze fighting his corner, Jay Electronica is making rap critics across the globe sit up and take notice. With so little released at the moment it is hard to imagine Jay Electronica being a household name by the end of 2011 but with tracks such as “Exhibit C” and “Renaissance Man” it’s hard to see how any lovers of hip-hop will not be drawn to this man; slick beats and a style reminiscent of a young Nas – truly enjoyable tracks.

Mac Miller (Rostrum Records)

Not an artist I expect to be appearing on the radio stations any time soon but an excellent introduction nevertheless. Miller provides anthems for the stoner generation, offering a style that would best be described as ‘Skater Hip-Hop’; think early Lupe Fiasco or a better Asher Roth. An album release in the near future doesn’t look imminent but his mixtape, K.I.D.S provides quality listening in the meantime.

P-Money (Avalanche Music)

Less likely to be part of the commercial scene in 2011 but, from a listeners perspective, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. P-Money has been slowly climbing to the top of grime tree and whilst he may not have a number one any time soon, his raw style and impressive verses are a monument to the current state of the underground scene. For anyone interested in where mainstream UK Hip-Hop comes from, go and check out P.

Wretch 32 (Ministry Of Sound)

After numerous attempts from 1Xtra, Wretch 32 was finally forced upon the masses through his debut single “Traktor”. Listeners could be forgiven for likening the track to one Mr Tempah, but make this comparison at your own peril; Wretch goes harder, thinks deeper and means more than Tinie ever will. I’ve heard Wretch being described as “your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper” and, after a peak of the upcoming album, I’m of the belief that this young man fits the description well.

We also had Mike Dinero and Alibi Rankz in the crowd, who we had a chance to talk to outside. It was a pretty dope show, and all of the artists did their thing. You’ll recognize a couple of the names from the last episode of REUPSpot Live, but this time we’ve got some show video for yall. Along with a couple of interviews, and a bunch of pictures. Check these guys out, and support underground hip-hop.

Diggy Simmons

Son of Rev-Run you could say you are destined for greatness, but Jo-Jo knocks off that saying. In 2009 Diggy came crashing the scene with his freestyle over Nas’ Made You Look then with his mixtape “The First Flight”.

He was signed to Atlantic Records on March 22, 2010. In August 2010, Diggy launched his sneaker line “Chivalrous Culture”. On August 20, 2010 a song called “Oh Yeah!” with Lupe Fiasco & Pharrell was released from his mixtape “Airborne”, which dropped on September 10th.

The only reason he would not make moves in 2011 would be because of Atlantic Records.

Big K.R.I.T.

Mississippi born 24 year Big K.R.I.T.(King Remembered In Time) has been dropping mixtapes since 2005, but recently gained some buzz with K.R.I.T. Wuz Here.

Also the same month (June) that Big K.R.I.T. dropped the mixtape he was signed to Def Jam records. He has been seen on Curren$y’s & Wiz Khalifa’s latest projects. Just last month he co-headlined The Smoker’s Club Tour with Curren$y and Smoke DZA. On the 2nd of this month K.R.I.T. dropped his latest project

CyHi Da Prynce

You may have known him as Prynce back in ’08 when he was signed to Konvict or when he accepted a sub-label deal with Def Jam Records in February 2009. Maybe it was when he was pushing Go Outside as his street anthem. You may remember talks of The Hardway Musical back then when he was transitioning into CyHi Da Prynce. The album has yet to be released, but only due to G.O.O.D. cause. CyHi has been busy running around with his G.O.O.D label mates making tracks like So Appalled. In October CyHi showed us a little more of what he has been cooking up on “Royal Flush“.

Oh if you didn’t know “So Appalled” will be featured on Kanye’s upcoming album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Not so bad huh? Whether it is his personality, significant lyrics or quality music…CyHi has a huge buzz and has been setting himself above the new-comers in the game.

XV

When I say Wichita, KS the first thing you’d think of wouldn’t be the next hottest rapper, I’m sure. Well, now it’s time to change that with XV on the scene. He’ll be the one to tell you he has KS on his back too. XV started to catch buzz during his “40 Days & 40 Nights” series. XV released a new song every morning and night for 40 days, 80 tracks total, as a project for his blog. Next up in July ’09 XV released Everybody’s Nobody along side of DJ Enuff & DJ Benzi. This project was enough for XV to be on last year’s list, but like most other I felt he needed to make one more step before getting there…He made several in 2010. He dropped the highly successful & popular projects 30 Minute Layover & Vizzy Zone.

If them project weren’t enough convincing for you…In mid-summer during preparation of his tour with Chiddy Bang & Donnis, XV signed a contract with Warner Bros. Records. Chiddy Bang

The alternative hip hop band out Philadelphia have made 2010 one hell of a year. In case you did not know Chiddy Bang consists of Chiddy (on the mic) and Xaphoon Jones (on the sampled beats). We first heard of Chiddy Bang on PrettyMuchAmazing which lead to their debut mixtape (in 2009) “The Swelly Express”. The compilation describes the journey of two kids from Philadelphia who finally meet the music industry “big-wigs” in New York City. After their success of the tape they signed a deal with EMI in early 2010.
Chiddy Bang has been on their tour grind for the most part of this year including dropping two projects, Air Swell & their album placeholder “The Preview”. “The Preview” was dropped in October due to their album “The Swelly Life” being pushed back into next year. It was a big success in Aus & UK, with 76th place on US Billboard. I’d expect much more success with “The Swelly Life” in 2011.

Gilbere Forte

When you see the name Gilbere Forte, I’m sure the first thing you think of is alors on danse which featured Kanye West. It all started in Flint, Michigan on July 14, 1987 rapper/producer Gilbere Forte’ (pronounced jil-bear) began his journey. Following his parents separation at an early age, Gilbere headed to Chicago with his mother for several years before making Philadelphia his home in 1999. What started when he was 12 (as at which he started to write) really began in 2009, Gilbere formalized his relationship with Raak. The two busily began preparing Gilbere’s debut. This February, in conjunction with streetwear brand Black Scale, their work made its debut in the form of a widely recognized mixtape sampler Gilbere Forte is BLVCK. The release has successfully solidified Gilbere as a strong voice not to be ignored. With his 87 Dreams release and momentum buzzing, Gilbere is promising to “change lives, moods, and vibes.”

Kendrick Lamar

Formerly known as K. Dot, the rapper has been on his grind, alongside Jay Rock and Top Dawg Entertainment, to place an end to the fake and present fans with “Human Music” that only real people with real lives can come to appreciate. With his change of radio aimed music to real life music came (emotional) tracks out of his archive on Kendrick Lamar Lp on the Dec. 31st 2009.

Because of how good his self titled project is, O.D. was one of the most anticipated projects of 2010. O.verly D.edicated was dropped on Sept. 15 and has been a huge success from his listeners stand point. Be on the look out in 2011 for Kendrick Lamar to get some mainstream buzz and even if he doesn’t he is one of the best emcees of our time.

Chip tha Ripper

Cleveland born rapper, Chip tha Ripper, has obtained a significant following through hip-hop blogs and frequent appearances on mixtapes. Much of Chip Tha Ripper’s recent work has been done alongside fellow Ohio native and rapper Kid Cudi. Chip had been around before Cudi, but was overlooked for using a slow, chopped ‘n’ screwed Texas style that was popular in 2007. Chip’s most recent work that was received with open arms was The Cleveland Show, 27 tracks long. Chip was featured on producer Hi-Tek’s first industry album, Hi-Teknology 3 in 2007; and on Kid Cudi’s first mixtape, “A Kid Named Cudi” in 2008. He was featured on Kid Cudi’s albums “Man on the Moon: The End of Day” and “Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager”. Currently Chip is producing his new album “Gift Raps” entirely produced by Chuck Inglish from The Cool Kids set to release in early 2011, and is working on a collaboration album titled “The Almighty GloryUS” with Kid Cudi.

Honestly I have been saving this as my surprise pick. Clarence Montgomery III is a born storyteller, Tre possess a razor sharp flow and a knack for witty rhymes on the mic. The Liquor Store Mascot dropped a killer with that mixtape back in ’09 (before that was GoodBye America in ’08). Then he hit us with (i’m saying a classic project)The Last Call on Aug. 30th, which happens to be the same date I got to meet him personally and watch him and B.o.B wreck the building. You’ve also heard him and B.o.B.’s – Bet I Bust. You will surely see more of him next year.

I know, right?! I’m a military B.R.A.T. (Born Raised And Trapped haha) I was lucky enough to be in FL for 9 years, then my fam got sent to Alaska, just a few months short of graduation. Straight bummed. But yeah man, I’m tryna put in as much work as possible to get back. I miss err’body back home haha

I know I see you collaborating…any solo work coming soon?

I actually haven’t done much lol. But yeah, I’ve been considering a diff name to avoid any confusion…And not too many people would mind since I’m still kinda new) But as far as what I HAVE done, I recently got in a track with Young D. Imma be colabbin with most of the MarvelUs Music Fam (Shoutoutz!), and I’m tryna get on a track with CB T.V lol (Shoutoutz!) Also, my shoolmates from back in Florida, Dylan and Allen, have a band called Autumn Under Fire. (Screamo/Pop/Electronic) Imma be on their next EP!! Solo work: Got a mixtape dropping…sometime this month haha (The Intermission) All industry beats (As soon as I get myself together).

Hows your site coming along?

It’s comin haha I’ve been so busy, I’m slackin, bruh. My last post was just the other day, and before that the last one was on 3/20 -__-

You dance and write…which came first?

Dancing for sure haha I’ve been dancing since I was 8. I aint get into writing till I was 14. I was tryna do more singing than rapping, but that’s done switched up now lol.

Which do you think you do better?

Dancing haha. Let’s see, I krump, pop, and I’m currently working on some breaking and choreo. I’ve got a dance crew that me and some friends started called Audio Movement (Shoutoutz!)

Who/What is your inspiration for writing?

As far as artists go, I listen to a lot of Lupe and Musiq (Soulchild) Biggest inspirations. And I also like to let the beat pull the words out. I’ve been listening to a lot more instro’s from The Gorillaz, 9th, Black Milk, Dilla (RIP), and Flying Lotus. That is, aside from more mainstream

Not much not much, just been dealing with school, work and trying to put these mixtapes together.

You been following the NCAA tournament, what are your thoughts on all the craziness?
Sadly, no i havent…….. havent been watching sports at all lately but i havent really been stressing about it or anything.

16 & from Alaska…what inspires you as an artist?
Well first being from Alaska where it’s dumb cold you gotta rap to stay warm…… lol naw but real talk since a youngster ive been real into music so i started writing rhymes with my best freind in 3rd grade. Now what
really keeps me on track is my idol Lupe Fiasco yeah thats right Lupe. Also my cus Jermery(AKream) famous local rapper is also a big inspiration too and hes helped me out alot too.

You produce also right?
Yeah I find my self pushin’ keys and touchin bass at least 3 times a week lol. But yeah i make beats up to now mostly on FL Studio but ive been moving over to my MPC 500. In the last couple month ive sold my first 3 beats so thats a good look.

What started first making beats or spitting rhymes?
Rappin’ def came first but producing started a couple years when Funk Master Flex dropped a beat making game on the PS2 and thats when i really wanted to make beats. Then a couple years later I got FL. But rapping has always been my headliner when it comes to this music stuff.

What are Young D’s plans for the future?
Well im planning on dropping a mixtape with all industry beats in the next week or so maybe even on a REUP sponsor….. Then what im really looking forward to is my mixtape “Microphone Dreams” all recorded at my labels fancy studio unlike all my past projects. Then a video at the end of the next week hopefully. Then the skies the limit for anything after that so I just pray that everything that happens is great.

What good D-ToR? Explain your name and the “Raps GPS” slogan.

The name, as well as the slogan, is a metaphor that represents my goal in music. Basically I want to get my listeners to a destination and that destination is great music. I feel like I’m a detour from the mundane routine.

Where is home and what does it mean to you?

Home is New Haven Connecticut! I’m proud to represent this city and I’m looking forward to shedding some light on the talent we have here. It means a lot that I properly represent and present what we have to offer to the world of entertainment.

What makes D-Tor different than the rest of the guys trying to get their name out there?

What makes me different is how regular I am. I’m not trying to be something I’m not and Never will be. I just simply showcase my reality in the most clever and artistic ways as I can. Don’t mistake regular for something like average that’d be a mistake.

When is your project coming and what is it going to mean for you?

The Great Impression. Reads like a mixtape but sounds like an album! As a whole the project is about music and its impression me and the life that I lead. It will be released soon, I’m putting the finishing touches on right now and I can not wait for people to hear what I’ve been working on. I promise music lovers will be ‘impressed’ and I’m a man of my word.
