Get Money, Never Lose, Stay Fly (Big Wayde Interview)
“White Plains, NY resident Big Wayde (Emcee/Songwriter/Clothing Designer) is easily one of the artists to watch for 2010. With his out of the box single “What Have They Done” garnering national attention, and his recently released mixtape “When The Rain Stopped” receiving rave reviews left and right (a download count of 5k and STILL rising), there’s no reason this young entrepreneur will not solidify himself as a brand to reckon with.A keen ear for raw and undeniable talent that spans far outside the realms of Rap will not only benefit himself, but those whom he plans to add to his already well-established GNS INC brand.”
Big W, whats good fam?
Trying to put these puzzle pieces to success together. Everyday shit my man, glad to be here.
NBA season is kicking off whose your team and who you got in the finals this year?
If I sat here and told you I’ve been following sports as much as the average dude I’d be lying [Laughs]. Honestly, the way i swamp myself in music and clothing related stuff, my mind rarely strays elsewhere.
I’m in grind mode right now, so unless money’s involved, my brain is probably the furthest thing from it [Laughs]. I’ll probably get back into sports heavy once we secure a few more deals, and we’re in a
comfort zone though.
Keeping it in sports…Who wins the World Series and in how many games?
I could care less how many games it takes, as long as New York brings it home. Regardless how many games I actually sit down to watch in their entirity, I always rep for NY, no matter where I’m at.
What does White Plains, NY mean to you?
Everything fam. That’s home feel me?
Let’s stay away from music still…Tell me about your clothing design andhow you started with this?
I’ve always had a love for the streetwear culture. I don’t know if it’s the freedom brands like BBC, Supreme, Alife represent, but there’s a “This is WTF we do, and that’s WTF it is”-aura you get [Laughs] and I love that. So like any normal person, as you grow your interest tends to deepen and that’s just how it fell into place. I watched all these independent brands flourish from just being themselves, and figured, I’m just as creative if not more than the next person, why not? I’m all about expanding the GNS INC brand as far
as the world will let me. Not only music and clothing, but if I pop up with a kick ass restaurant idea tomorrow, it won’t be long before you see GNS INC chain spots worldwide [Laughs]. I’ve always had that mindstate.
You got a favorite shoe?
SB Dunks, Hi’s all day. They have every colorway you could ask for [Laughs].
Any plans to branch into designing shoes?
Most definitly. Once we’ve taken the necessary steps to really solidify the appearal branch of GNS INC on a more widespread level, I’m ready to get some kicks in the works. We’ve actually had some discussions as far as making a collaboration happen between GNS INC and probably most people’s favorite sneaker brands sooner than you think, but until the ink dries that’s all we’ll drop on that note [Laughs].
Aight, Who/What influenced the beast within Big Wayde to start rhyming?
Honestly, one of my homies who lived upstairs in my old building put me on to it. I always used to kick it with him while he laid joints down in the home studio. One day he was just like “Yo, try it, see if you nice”. I remember the first joint I ever rocked to was Busta’s Hands Where My Eyes Can See record. It was probably horrible, but at the time nobody could tell me that, I was feeling myself [Laughs]. But yeah, after that i messed around with music for a while and then around 17-18 I really realized I wanted to do this, and began taking steps to making it into a career. Shout out to Oh-Dee.
Step by step, what was the process in making “When The Rain Stopped”?
A lot of herb, long studio sessions, and a handful of dope beats. Simple remedy right [Laughs]? The next project will probably be a lot more technical though due to the sponsors involved, the potential promo campaigns etc. Everything we’re doing now, we’re making bigger next time around.
In ten words or less define “When The Rain Stopped”.
“THIS, proves I can rap, watch what the album does”
Whats next for Big Wayde? Do you think this EP is going to push you into mainstream status?
Really just let When The Rain Stopped run its course for now. It’s been getting relatively good support online, shouts to everybody who helped us break the 5k mark. As far as mainstream status I don’t want to say Yes, nor do I want to say No. I mean, I’m not AGAINST it doing so, if it happens, that’s what’s up, but if it doesn’t that’s cool. Putting it out I knew i wanted to use it as a pre-cursor to my next project. Hence the small amount of original records that appear on it. I really just wanted something i could give to everyone like this is Big Wayde, this is what he does. The next full length CD we release will be loaded with never before heard original joints, that’ll hopefully win-over those whom wished to hear more of them this time around. The just of any negative feedback we’ve gotten has been related to the fact there weren’t many Big Wayde SONGS. If i dissapointed anyone with When The Rain Stopped, I’ll be sure to change their mind with the next tape. It’s definitly a project worth taking a listen to, to familiarize yourself with what’s about to be huge though. I hope people will just understand the method to my madness.
Do you produce also?
No Sir, God knows though if i did, I’d shut it DOWN [Laughs]. I just don’t have the patience [Laughs].
I know the hype is about your single, but my favorite track is “Road To Success”…what is your favorite track off the EP?
Personally my favorite is “What Have They Done”. I think it’s a real good intro as to where I’m going to take my music. Let’s just say my all original project, is going to be What Have They Done “ALL THE WAY TURNT UP” [Laughs]. Aside from the fact Yelawolf murdered that chorus.
Hit us up with your shoutouts…
Shout out to the whole GNS INC camp. Prep Gordon, G, Jac, I’ll see yall in a little bit. White Plains, I promise i got this. REUPSPOT of course for taking the time to do this with us, and everybody whose supported us so far in our journey to the top as much as everyone who’ll catch on later.
Leave us with your favorite quote..
Greatness Never Settles, GNS INC bitch [Laughs]. Peace.
